Bird of the Year 2019: The Skylark (Alauda arvensis)
...is one of the once most widespread native songbirds, whose song, performed high above our fields, heralds the arrival of spring every year. As an inhabitant of open, treeless landscapes, the species is found in fields, meadows and pastures as well as in heathland. It is considered a classic cultural follower and inhabits all habitats in which it finds not too high, sparse vegetation in which it can build its ground nests undisturbed, hide and forage among the grasses and wild herbs. In spring, the first skylarks high above our fields announce the approaching spring. The males sing their song from a great height while flying. The trilling, chirping or rolling sounds are repeated rhythmically in quick succession and can be performed continuously for up to five minutes. Their song seems to come directly from the sky.
Visually, the skylark is rather inconspicuous. With its 16 to 18 cm body length and beige to reddish-brown plumage on the upper side, it is well camouflaged when crouching on the ground. Its only ornamentation consists of fine, black-brown longitudinal stripes and lines on the top of the head, back and rump. On the chest it is yellowish-white or very light brown with fine black lines. The belly plumage is white and forms a contrast to the brownish, relatively long tail. The skylark's face is adorned with a yellowish-white, strong supercilium. Both sexes also have a small crest on their heads.
